Artist’s Statement

After more than a decade my enthusiasm for creating ceramic pieces is
boundless. I’ve taken many classes and countless wonderful workshops,
learning something helpful from every potter/teacher, especially my
husband, Bob.

Through the exploration of many processes, I find myself drawn to both the
wheel and texture. I’m most fascinated by functional pots. Hand building
teapots, vases, and a variety of platters from textured thrown slabs is a
constant challenge. My husband, a long time professional potter, is my slab
maker.

I like to create pieces that others are drawn to while I’m constantly
trying to improve the design and functionality of my work. I love
to make bowls on the wheel, then explore a variety of glazes.

The other area of fascination is working with colored clays. I sometimes
use the colored loaves that I create from different colored clays by
themselves. At other times I laminate them in thin slices on a plain
background and then create a form. The exploration goes on!

Artist Statement

February, 2008

My long years involved with the potters wheel recently includes
experiments with the application of wet clay to a thrown cylinder
which are then expanded from the inside, coupled with selective
drying.

The resultant surface has elements of inadvertency
reminiscent of the Mingei style.

Using a variation of tools on the wet clay gives me a variety of
surprising textures, that keep me exploring for more.

By using these textured slabs I can create numerous vase forms
by hand building with them.

Christine’s professional work in equine and graphic design is based on
twenty-three years of experience. She worked for Landor Associates in
San Francisco, then branched off into her own design company,
serving as department chairs for San Francisco Academy of Art
University for ten years and recently, the Corcaran College of Art and
Design in Washington, DC.

Design Clients

Christine’s work has been recognized by a Clio and 2 Addy Awards, which
were won while collaborating on corporate and packaging identities
from Coca-Cola The New Coke, Dole, Tree Top, Jergens, Continental Airlines,
Del Monte, DiMare, V8, and the International Space Station NASA.

Fine Art Clients

Her equine art focused on working with, photographing, and painting
many famous clients: Gandalf’s trusty stead Shadowfox from Lord of the Rings,
Kentucky Derby Champion Barbaro, Smarty Jones, Afleet Alex, to Storm Cat,
Birdstone, Presidential Affaire and many more.

Publishings

Her fine artistry including photography, oil paintings, and carousel horses,
has appeared in such internationally publications as The Bloodhorse, Equine
Images, Horse Talk Sidelines, Cambridge’s Who’s Who to the Kentucky Derby
Gift Shop Museum, Back in the Saddle Catalogue, Exclusively Equine, and more.
She is also one of the official photographers of the Kentucky Derby Archives,
and has shown in galleries from California to New York

Arts Council Napa Valley welcomes you to the 21st annual Napa Valley Open Studios Tour!

The Mission of Napa Valley Open Studios is to promote Napa Valley fine art through the opening of creative spaces across the county, to educate and inspire the community about Napa Valley art, and to support the livelihoods of working artists.

Open Studios is a juried program that includes two weekends of self-guided tours of artists’ studios throughout the Napa Valley, featuring painters, sculptors, photographers, ceramicists, fiber artists, jewelry makers, glass artists, and other fine artisans. This program is a unique opportunity to meet and talk with artists, learn about art-making techniques and the creative process, and buy local art right from the source.

The Open Studios Preview Exhibition, hosted by Mumm Napa, runs from August 23rd through September 6th with a kick-off reception on September 5th. Beautiful, full-color Artist Catalogs with a detailed map, artist images, and program information will be available in August. Steve Salisian taught Ceramics and Photography at San Jose City
College from 1968 to 1998. He continues to “hang out” there as a
volunteer assistant in Ceramics.

Steve works with small forms in porcelain and stoneware focusing on variations
of pouring and drinking vessels.

Combining wheel-throwing and hand-building in a single piece,
Steve emphasizes both decoration and function, utilizing various
textures, and decorative handles and spouts.

A resident of Aptos, CA since 1974, Steve has been a frequent
participant in Santa Cruz County Open Studio Tours, and has
exhibited in many local regional and national shows.

Steve enjoys traveling and photographing various events, cultures
and environments in Europe and Asia.

He has done extensive photographic work at the Carnival in Venice,
Bali, Indonesia, China, and most recently in Vietnam.

The largest collection of Steve Salisian Photography and Ceramics is featured at
KAPOWICH REAL ESTATE, in the Kapowich Art Gallery.

Fred Yokel

For the past 4 or 5 years I have been concentrating on these voluminous, non-anatomically-correct figures. They typically have large legs and lower portions and become smaller in the torso area and head. I like to show actions and emotions in their poses rather than detailed facial expressions, thus the heads are usually minimally expressive. I am also very interested in surface texture and continue to search for new inspiration for finishes on my pieces. I find new ideas looking at geologic formations, plant textures and weathered surfaces, both natural and man-made.

Most of the pieces are built using the coil method. I use coils that are quite fat and flatten them to make them taller before attachment. I like to call them sloils–kind of a combination slab and coil. I typically start with the feet and work my way up coaxing the clay to get the flow of the stance that I am striving for.

Inspiration for poses comes from many places–my kids, Yoga, dance, baseball, Cirque du Soleil. I often sketch poses before I begin so I can refine them and also so I don’t forget them. There are so many possibilities. Many of the pieces express humor. I like to laugh and believe that laughter is therapeutic, so it is actually complimentary for someone to laugh while viewing my work.

I believe each piece of pottery has its own

or pass lovingly from one person to another.

My best work starts with a simple seed of an idea,
then I just get out of the way and let the Great
Creator flow through my hands and into the clay.
